Camp Cutlery is my first published book and continues from my web series, McTucky Fried High. Given the high cost and time animation and wanting to tell stories longer than 5 minutes, I created this shortly after the end of season 2 of McTucky. As a trans creator, I wanted to center the story around one of my favorite, radical characters, Peanut. I wanted to see what would happen if the “comfort” of high school was taken away and explore the challenges of breaking the gender binary. In this case, with a juvenile detention center and military boarding school hybrid.
Peanut (pronouns: they, them, theirs) is an outspoken transgender rebel with a cause. When getting revenge on a bully causes the school to explode, Peanut is sentenced to a youth correctional facility, Camp Cutlery. Here, girls must wear skirts, boys must wear pants, and there is no such thing as being trans.
